Roulette Rules

There are many different ways to place roulette bets. Each bet covers a different set of numbers and has a different distribution, as shown in the "Winnings Table" section.

The Bet Description
Straight Up You can bet on any number, including 0, by placing the chip on the centre of a number.
Split Bet You can bet on two numbers by placing a chip on the line that divides the two numbers.
Corner Bet You can bet on four numbers by placing chips at the corner where the four numbers meet.
Column Bet There are three boxes labelled "2 to 1" at the bottom of a column of numbers. You can place bets for all of these numbers by placing your chip in one of these boxes. If any of the numbers in your column is hit you get paid 2:1; 0 is a losing number.
Dozen Bet You can bet on a group of twelve numbers by placing your chip in one of the three boxes marked "1st 12," "2nd 12," or "3rd 12." If one of your 12 numbers is hit, you are paid 2:1; 0 is a losing number.
Red/Black, Even/Odd Bets You can place a bet in one of the boxes on the left, long side of the table that covers half of the roulette table numbers (excluding the 0). Each box covers 18 numbers. You win even money (1 to 1) on all of these bets; 0 is a losing number.

What all the bets in above have in common is they all lose if a zero comes up, but otherwise you are getting fair odds. Hence every bet is the same from an odds perspective and all are equally bad with a house edge of about 2.7% (being 1/37).

Hence there really isn't any opportunity for strategy, except for the fact that there are various versions of the game.

The game as described above (with one 0) is commonly known as European roulette. There is also a version called American Roulette which is the same game except the wheel has two green 0s (a 0 and a 00). What this serves to do is make the odds much worse for the player, at over 5%. For this reason your first rule is to never play Roulette with two 0s on it, always find a single zero wheel.

Just like American Roulette is one to be avoided, there's a type of French Rules Roulette that is worth checking out. This can have a concession called "En Prison" which gives you 50% of your stake back on all the even money bets if the 0 is rolled. This effectively halves the house edge to 1.35% for those even money bets, and this is by far the best version of roulette you are going to get.

One thing to be aware of in roulette is the difference between American (double 0) and European (Single 0) wheels. Other than the numerous bets which are available in all versions of the game there are also special betting options found in particular versions of the game.

When you play French Roulette you will be able to bet on a betting plan called a “racecourse” which enables you to place multiple bets, referred to as Neighbour of French bets, in one click.

Most importantly there is also a rule in the French version called "En Prison" which is effectively a concession whereby you get a 50% stake refund on the even money bets if the 0 is rolled.

This has a massive impact on the odds of the game as it effectively halves the house advantage (if you stick to the even money bets anyway).
